SAVATInvoice: VAT Invoice Generator for South African SMEs

Issuing the wrong invoice type for the amount is the compliance mistake that costs your customer their input VAT claim. SARS sets three tiers by the VAT-inclusive total: R50 or less needs no tax invoice at all, R50 to R5,000 needs only an abridged invoice, and anything over R5,000 needs a FULL tax invoice with the recipient's name, address and VAT number. Enter the amount either way (excluding or including the standard 15% VAT) and your recipient's details, and this tells you which tier applies and names exactly which required field is still missing.

Accounting & Finance

South African small business owners and freelancers who issue their own VAT invoices and want to know which tier applies before a customer's audit finds the gap.

How it works

  1. Name this invoice, e.g. "Invoice 0042".
  2. Choose whether your amount excludes or includes VAT, and enter it in Rand.
  3. Enter the recipient's name, address and VAT number if you have them.
  4. See which SARS tier applies, what is still missing for that tier, and the generated invoice text.

What you gain

  • SARS's three real thresholds applied automatically: R50 or less needs no tax invoice, R50-R5,000 needs an abridged invoice, over R5,000 needs a FULL tax invoice
  • A full tax invoice legally requires the recipient's name, address AND VAT number - this checks for all three and names exactly which one is missing
  • Works both ways: enter the amount excluding VAT or including VAT at the standard 15% rate, and get the other figure correctly derived
  • Generates the invoice text in the correct shape for the tier that applies - an abridged invoice never asks for recipient details it does not need

Frequently asked questions

Is my invoice data stored or shared?

No, invoices are saved only in your browser's local storage under the name you give. Nothing is sent to any server, and you can clear it by clearing your browser data.

What happens if I enter an amount under R50?

The tool will show that no tax invoice is needed per SARS rules, so it won't ask for recipient details or generate invoice text.

Does this tool calculate VAT for reduced rates or zero-rated items?

No, it only works with the standard 15% VAT rate. It does not handle reduced, zero-rated, or exempt supplies.
